Curriculum Vitae of Chris Clayton

Professor Chris Clayton is Professor of Infrastructure Engineering at Southampton University, where he is Head of the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment. He has written about 200 journal and conference papers, and has published textbooks on 'Site Investigation' and on 'Earth pressure and earth-retaining structures', which have been translated into Turkish and Italian. He has authored five national guidance (C.I.R.I.A.) reports (on the SPT, procurement of ground investigation and on engineering in the Chalk). He was a member of Health and Safety Executive Board that controlled the investigation of the Heathrow tunnel collapse in 1994, and reviewed restart proposals for London's Jubilee Line Extension tunnelling, and authored the influential ICE/DETR Report on 'Managing Geotechnical Risk'. He is currently chairman of ICE-led Site Investigation Steering Group, which is revising the "Site Investigation in Construction" publications. He has been Editor of Geotechnical Engineering (part of the Proceedings of the UK Institution of Civil Engineers, and of the Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, and from January 2009 will be the Editor of Geotechnique.
